No-shows aren't random. In most UK independents they cluster around Saturday MOTs, school-holiday Mondays and the first cold snap of winter.
Cut those three and you cut most of the pain.
1. Deposits on the risky slots only
You don't need deposits everywhere. Turn them on for Saturdays, holiday Mondays and premium services. £10–£20 is plenty.
Deposits nett off the final invoice, so nobody is really out of pocket — they're just committed.
2. SMS the day before, not the day of
Same-day reminders arrive too late to reschedule. Send yesterday-evening reminders with a one-tap link to move the slot.
3. Make rescheduling one tap
If moving a booking takes 3 minutes on a phone call, customers just don't show. If it takes one tap, they reschedule and you fill the slot.
4. Cap same-week Saturdays for new customers
A first-time customer booking a Saturday MOT is the highest no-show risk. Ask for the deposit; the ones that pay will show up.
