How to price a job using labour time in a UK workshop

A well-run workshop uses labour-time to price, not a mechanic's mood. This guide covers the framework we recommend for UK independents.

Set one labour rate

One customer-facing labour rate per bay type. Split diagnostic vs mechanical if you want, but keep it to two.

Publish the rate in the customer booking terms — trust matters more than a hidden fiver.

Use labour-time books, not guesswork

Autodata / HaynesPro / manufacturer data give you a defensible time. Deviating up needs a note; deviating down is a competitive advantage.

Price = labour + parts + consumables + VAT

Consumables (bolts, clips, cleaner) belong on every invoice as a small % or fixed line — not absorbed into your margin.

Frequently asked questions

Should I match nearby dealer rates?
Match the value, not the number. A £75 rate with fast turnaround beats a £110 rate with a 3-day wait.
